The renovation of Piazza Cordusio in Milan
The Municipality of Milan has approved the commencement of building works in Piazza Cordusio to make the square more pedestrian friendly, with construction work earmarked for spring 2025.
Piazza Cordusio, an iconic, elliptical square designed by architect Luca Beltrami in the late19th and early 20th centuries and situated in the city centre between Piazza Duomo and Piazza Castello, is now a rather chaotic and complicated space for pedestrians to cross.
The renovation of Piazza Cordusio aims to revive the former grandeur of the public space that has been lost during its use and as a consequence of the street transformations it has undergone.
In order to enhance the pedestrian continuity between the cathedral and the castle, the project by Freyrie Flores, MIC-HUB and Esa Engineering proposes to close the southern section of Via Dante to vehicular traffic. The existing pedestrian island will also be widened and vehicle transit through the square will be largely restricted, with only trams allowed to pass through the main pedestrian flow.
