Masterplan for the reconstruction of Antakya, Turkey
The masterplan for the reconstruction of the Turkish city of Antakya, by Foster + Partners, Buro Happold, MIC-HUB, and leading Turkish practices DB Architects and KEYM Urban Renewal Centre was presented to the public at an international press conference held at Foster + Partners’ London office.
The mobility strategy will provide strong public connectivity and micro-mobility infrastructure to minimise private car use in the newly regenerated region.
MIC-HUB is working with an international consortium led by Foster + Partners and Türkiye Design Council (TDC), to develop a comprehensive masterplan covering 30 square kilometres that would preserve the city’s heritage while enhancing its resilience and sustainability.
Key elements of the project include:
– The reconstruction of 13 neighbourhoods destroyed by the earthquake;
– A new seismic design for buildings;
– New urban design principles such as using public spaces as emergency assembly areas and emphasising safe places;
– A focus on community engagement, the restoration of key sites and religious buildings to maintain cultural continuity.
The masterplan aims to create a safer, more inclusive future for Antakya’s residents and encourage those who migrated after the earthquake to return, balancing the need for modernisation with the preservation of cultural heritage.
