Masterplan for the reconstruction of the earthquake affected area of Hatay in Turkey

We are helping to rebuild Turkey’s Hatay province following the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria in February 2023.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria, causing thousands of buildings to collapse and killing more than 55,000 people and injuring more than 100,000 in the two countries.

The reconstruction, with a masterplan led by Foster + Partners, will help the residents of Hatay, who migrated after the earthquake, to return to their homeland. It will also provide a sustainable approach to a safer and more inclusive future.

At the heart of the proposal is a master plan for the city of Antakya, considering 80% of the city was destroyed during the event.

Reconstruction requires a sensitive dialogue between theory and practice. It will aim to ensure the longevity of the region in the future while also preserving its heritage.

Through the study of origin/destination matrices, the mobility strategy will provide targeted solutions for strong public connections, viable alternatives to private cars and micro-mobility options.

MIC-HUB is part of a consortium led by the Turkey Design Council, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the social and economic development of the country through design. We are collaborating with 13 companies across various fields (including architecture, heritage and engineering), with the participation of international architecture firms such as Foster + Partners and BIG, and Turkish studios like DB Architects and KEYM.
