Nyabugogo Transportation Hub
Kigali
The goal of the project is the reconfiguration of the intermodal hub located in the Nyabugogo neighbourhood at the foot of the central business district (CBD) of Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, in a complex area from a hydraulic and environmental point of view.
The 2013 Kigali Master Plan identifies the project area as a commercial and tertiary zone, one of the gateways to the future metropolis. With its 1.2 million inhabitants, Kigali needs an efficient transport infrastructure system that is respectful of environmental protection values, something for which Rwanda is recognized as among the most virtuous countries in the world.

Our contribution
Funded by the EU and on behalf of SPEA, MIC-HUB proposed two interventions: one, a medium / long-term project concerning the positioning of Avenue de Pois Lourds, and the other, a short-term project focussing on immediately feasible interventions for the reorganization of the road system surrounding the bus and taxi terminals.
The short-term proposals centred on the five intersections that circumscribe the intermodal node, providing for the transformation of the current area into a more efficient and structured transport hub through the separation of services and the management of intense pedestrian flows.
These actions were coordinated with hydraulic works to secure the area (which is often subject to flooding) and with the reconstruction of the bridge on the NR3 Kigali-Gatuna Road.
The urban road plan, completed through an analysis of traffic flows and volumes, is based on a precise, safe road design for all users, and on the creation of an environment that encourages and supports alternative modes of transport, public transport, and pedestrian or Non-Motorized Transport (NMT).
