The project focused on pedestrian and traffic study of Penn Station and its surroundings, to support the re-development of Pennsylvania Plaza, a complex of high rise buildings.
Pennsylvania Plaza is a complex of high-rise buildings located on top of Penn Station, the busiest transit hub in New York City.
The development of an additional tower along with the ambitious renewal program of the area, developed by Foster + Partners, involved a thorough analysis of mobility at various scales and levels. The proposed new building rises in an area crossed heavily by people flows, especially commuters, both at ground level and underground.

Our contribution
MIC-HUB had the scope of exploring the relationship between the station and the building, defining possible implications of the new traffic volumes generated and their impact on commuter movements.
A multiple block-wide pedestrian model was fundamental in creating a clear picture of the volumes involved, understanding people’s movements and testing the future configuration of the station and the surrounding area.
The first step was the creation of a baseline scenario to understand the current pinch points on the site and to suggest possible strategic solutions to be incorporated into the development plan against an evaluation of multiple configuration options.
MIC-HUB was also responsible for analysing the existing traffic conditions around the site and developing a possible reorganisation of the drop-off facilities for the station and the Penn Plaza buildings.
