Azienda Ospedaliera per l'Emergenza Cannizzaro is the third largest public health institution in the province of Catania.

A vehicular wayfinding project for the hospital car park was developed to improve the accessibility and usability of the internal road network and car parks.

The main objective was to optimise the orientation of visitors and staff by creating a clear, intuitive and effective signage system.

The project began with an in-depth analysis of the hospital's services and outpatient clinics to understand traffic flows, user needs and critical issues in the existing internal road system.

Based on this analysis, a wayfinding strategy was defined, organising the car parks into colour-coded zones to facilitate instant recognition and to direct users to the appropriate car park for their destination.

Our contribution

The project is based on different users visiting the hospital, categorised by emergency cases (going to the A&E department), first time users, patients and visitors.

The project involved several orientation tools:

Directional signage: clear and legible road signs placed at strategic points to guide vehicles to the most appropriate parking areas;

Car park demarcation signs: each car park was identified by a specific colour, corresponding to a particular hospital sector, reducing the risk of disorientation;

Information hierarchy: content organisation was designed to provide only the necessary information in a clear and effective manner, minimising cognitive overload and improving user experience.

Colour combinations were carefully chosen to maximise visibility in low light conditions, while the use of highly legible typography with clear and appropriately-sized fonts ensures better readability from a distance.
